When we think about people hunting for jobs, we often think about people looking for entry level jobs, but that is quickly becoming a thing of the past! With the economy in the shape that it is in, it is not unusual to find senior executives who are looking for a new career or who find that a new career is something that they are hunting. Whether by chance or by choice if you are someone who is in this position you will find that there are some challenges that you might be running into. If you are used to having a higher salary or you have a salary that would be difficult to match by your new employers, it can scare your interviewers off. Take some time and think about how you can account for this issue and also make sure that you keep a few tips in mind.

Remember that you should make sure that the hiring managers know that you are serious. A lot of companies are worried that advanced senior executives who are looking for work with them are merely dallying in the field and that they are not really interested. Your job is to show them how very invested and enthusiastic you are about working with them. If you have never worked in that field before, you need to do your research and you need to do it well. Show them that you know about the field that they work in as well as the industry that they inhabit and show them how eager you are to join it.

Another thing that people worry about with people who are overqualified is that they will not be team players. All of your experience will not mean anything to them if they are afraid that you will not put it to use for them. This would be the time to emphasize your soft skills and to show them how good they are. You need to show them that you are a team player and that you are interested in helping them get to where they are going. You need to be an excellent communicator and you need to show them how eager you are to work for them. Be blunt about your triumphs, but make sure that they do not feel as though you are trying to overwhelm them. This can be something that really puts them off your case.

When you are worried about being overqualified for your position, this often translates to the people who are doing the hiring being worried about money. If they think they cannot afford you, they are not going to give you a second glance. This is where you need to be perfectly blunt. Let them know that you are willing to negotiate on your salary and let them know why. The opportunity that you are looking for may be something that allows for you to be more negotiable on your salary and you will discover that they will reward your honesty.

Getting a job when you are overqualified can be irritating, but it is manageable, so see where it takes you.
